Dissipative connections frames
P100-1/2013 introduces new types of braced frames:
•X braces over two storeys
• Inverted V braces with "zipper column"
• Superior performance in comparison of classic
inverted V frames due to reduced demands on the beam
• Behaviour factors as for X braced frames
• Design validated through nonlinear analysis
Design provisions for buckling restrained braced frames
• New in Europe
• Buckling of the steel core prevented by the encasing steel tube filled with mortar
• Dissipative connections are allowed in P100-1/2013 and SR EN1998-1:2004 provided their inelastic cyclic
performance is qualified through tests
•Project specific
•Available in literature
•Prequalified (currently not available in Europe)
• RFCS project European pre-QUALified steel JOINTS (EQUALJOINTS)
• Partners: Universita Degli Studi di Napoli Federico II (coordinator), Arcelormittal Belval & Differdange SA,

cine, Universidade de Coimbra, European Convention for Constructional Steelwork, Cordioli & C. S.P.A.
P100-1/2013 provides behaviour factors for dual V-braced frames (not available in P100-1/2006 or SR EN
1998-1:2004)
Stable and symmetric hysteretic response
• Performance validated through tests according to EN 15129
• Frame arrangements should not use intersecting braces
Joints in steel constructions are subjected to high
stresses and prone to brittle failures due to stress
concentrations and brittle response of welds and
bolts
• Traditionally connections were required to be nondissipa-
tive (including in P100-1/2006)
• Ductile response possible when th joints is carefully de-
signed and the ductility of certain components exploited (e.g.
column panel zone, column flange, end plate, etc.)
